AB de Villiers anticipates Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s participation in the 2024 T20 World Cup, believing their hunger for victory might lead them to aim for the tournament.
Former South African cricket maestro AB de Villiers expresses confidence that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will likely feature in India’s T20 World Cup squad next year, aiming to claim the elusive title. While Kohli has yet to secure a T20 World Cup win despite being a top run-scorer multiple times, Rohit, a member of the victorious 2007 squad, seeks to add another championship to India’s accolades. Despite their absence in recent T20Is, the duo’s hunger for victory remains, according to de Villiers.
The former batter also commended India’s decision to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as captain, praising Yadav’s innovative and multifaceted playing style as a promising asset for India’s leadership in South Africa.
“We just have to see them there (Rohit & Virat). It’s all about their hunger. Do they have the hunger to go there and win the T20 World Cup? I think so. I cannot speak on their behalf but I think they will want to go there and win. T20 World Cup is a short tournament and you do set yourselves up to have another chance of winning a World Cup. So I do see them going there,” De Villiers said when speaking on his YouTube Channel.
“India captained by Suryakumar Yadav is quite a nice move, I like that. He is a bit of a 360-degree player. He thinks differently and is a bit creative. It will be nice to watch him lead his troops in South Africa,” he added.
De Villiers further praised the team managements of India and South Africa for valuing domestic performances in their T20I squad selections. He highlighted the Indian players’ IPL success and the inclusion of South African talents from the SA20 season.
According to him, these choices, based on domestic achievements, indicate selectors’ anticipation of assessing the players’ abilities under pressure, especially with the T20 World Cup on the horizon.
