AB De Villiers
AB de Villiers, when asked about possibly coaching cricket teams, expressed uncertainty but said he would enjoy coaching despite certain aspects he might not like.

Following the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup, India’s national cricket team will be set for a coaching transition as current head coach Rahul Dravid is set to depart post-tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated the search for Dravid’s successor, prompting speculation around notable figures like Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming as potential candidates.

Recent reports revealed that Ponting was approached for the role but declined the opportunity, affirming his commitment to Delhi Capitals. Similarly, Justin Langer and Andy Flower have also distanced themselves from consideration.

In the midst of the BCCI’s search for a new head coach, former South African cricketer AB de Villiers shared insights on a potential coaching role with the Indian team. While uncertain about immediate coaching prospects, De Villiers expressed a genuine interest in coaching, acknowledging both the appealing and challenging aspects of the role.

“I absolutely have no idea. I do think I’ll enjoy coaching. I think there’s certain elements I won’t enjoy as much, which I will have to learn. With time, anything is possible and I can think on my feet and learn as I move on,” De Villiers said to News18.

“But I think there are elements of a coaching job that I’ll enjoy a lot. Things that I’ve learned over the years, the maturity that I’ve got now at the age of 40, looking back, a lot of things look a lot clearer when I look back at my career. So those kind of learnings could be valuable for some younger players, even some senior players,” he added.

Notably, while a permanent head coaching position may not be on the immediate horizon, the former cricketer said he might leave the door open for potential future shifts in perspective. De Villiers’ illustrious career spans 114 Tests, 228 ODIs, and 78 T20Is for South Africa, as well as 184 IPL matches with RCB.

“And I would love to work with some players and some teams in that regard. As a full-time head coach, that’s not something that comes to mind as of yet. It’s not something that really appeals to me now. But as I said, never say never. Down the line, things might change,” he concluded.
