AB de Villiers recently expressed his disappointment over Aiden Markram losing his captaincy at Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2024, citing Markram’s previous successes and potential.
AB de Villiers has voiced his disappointment at the decision to replace Aiden Markram as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite the team’s underwhelming performance under Markram’s leadership in IPL 2023, where they won only four out of 14 matches, de Villiers highlighted Markram’s successful stint as captain of Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa’s SA20.
“There’s reason for him (Pat Cummins) to be captain in that team, even though it’s a bit of a surprise to most people, a bit of an upset to me perhaps to see Aiden Markram being moved across and sort of just had to make way for Pat Cummins there, even though Aiden Markram has won back-to-back SA20 tournaments,” de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.
While disappointed by the change, de Villiers conceded that if it’s in the best interest of the SRH team, then it must be accepted.
“I think he’s a fantastic captain, and they were just getting used to him as captain there at the SRH. So, it is disappointing to me, to him, and to all South African fans, but if it is for the best of the SRH team, then so be it.” he added.
Ahead of IPL 2024, Hyderabad’s management appointed Pat Cummins as skipper, securing him for ₹20.50 crore at the Dubai mini-auction. De Villiers expressed little surprise, citing new SRH head coach Daniel Vettori’s previous collaboration with Cummins during his tenure as Australia’s bowling coach. He anticipated an Australian influence on the team, including potential involvement from Andrew McDonald.
SRH kicks off their IPL 2024 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on March 23.
