AB de Villiers hinted at the possibility of coaching RCB in IPL 2024, mentioning Virat Kohli’s expressed desire to have him back.
AB de Villiers, the former South African cricket captain, has hinted at the possibility of coaching Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Despite expressing interest from Virat Kohli, there hasn’t been any official word from the franchise.
De Villiers, who was recently inducted into RCB’s Hall of Fame alongside Chris Gayle, currently serves as a member of the broadcast team. However, he stated on his YouTube channel that he remains open to a coaching position if approached by head coach Andy Flower or skipper Faf du Plessis.
“Nothing confirmed yet, Virat has hinted that he might want me to come over and spend a bit of time with him and some of the batters. That call will come from Andy Flower, Faf, and the team. For now, I’m just going to be in Mumbai for the first few weeks of the IPL. I’m doing a bit of commentating,” said de Villiers.
Known for his explosive batting, de Villiers retired from IPL cricket in 2021 with an impressive record of 5162 runs from 184 matches. He was a vital player for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) alongside stars like Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli.
He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in November 2021, citing difficulties after undergoing eye surgery. Expressing regret to RCB fans for not securing an IPL title, de Villiers had stated his intention to visit Chinnaswamy Stadium to thank fans for their support.
Since retiring, he has dedicated himself to his YouTube channel, where he provides cricket match analyses, showcasing his continued passion for the sport in a different capacity.
