Ricky Ponting advised India to maintain mental clarity and handle pressure effectively to overcome their ICC trophy drought.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting shared his opinion on India’s quest to end their ICC trophy drought, which stretches back to the 2013 Champions Trophy win under MS Dhoni. Ponting, who led Australia to World Cup victories in 2003 and 2007, emphasised the importance of mental clarity for success.
“You’ve got to try and keep a clear mind where you can focus on the task at hand rather than thinking too far ahead or worrying about any sort of external pressures,” Ponting advised, according to Telegraph India.
He acknowledged India’s talent but underscored the competitiveness of major tournaments. “There’s no doubting the talent in the India squad, but we also shouldn’t forget that the World Cups are not easy to win. There are all the best players in the world together at one time in different contrasting conditions,” he added.

Ponting further highlighted the crucial role of mindset in winning teams. “So look, there’s definitely a mindset thing to it. How you deal with pressure, how you cope with pressure, and how you think your way through certain situations is the difference between winning and losing a T20 game,” he concluded.
Notably, India’s T20 World Cup campaign began on June 5th with a dominant win against Ireland in New York. Their next challenge comes on June 9th against arch-rivals Pakistan, another hurdle in their quest to break the ICC trophy drought.
