Akash Deep Sends message to selectors
Akash Deep expressed his desire to play across formats and confirmed recovery after injury before the upcoming West Indies Test series.
Star India pacer Akash Deep has revealed that his biggest dream is to bring the best version of himself to the field and improve consistently so that he can represent India across formats. Speaking at the Cricket Association of Bengal’s annual awards function, the 27-year-old said that while his aim is clear, the final decision lies with selectors.
“My dream is to bring my best version and improve myself so that I can play across formats. But I’m not a selector,” Akash said. “If the team needs my batting, I will bat.”
The pacer had played a big role in India’s performance during the England series, where his match-winning 10-for at Edgbaston was one of the highlights. Despite his batting heroics in the final Test, Akash clarified that he does not want to be seen as an all-rounder.
“The 66 I scored in the second innings at The Oval was also important, but as a bowler, I would always like to win the match with my bowling,” he added.

Akash’s batting potential first came into the spotlight during the drawn Melbourne Test in Australia last year, when he struck two sixes under pressure. His recent 66 at The Oval once again showed his ability with the bat, though he insists his primary focus remains bowling.
The Bengal pacer missed the Duleep Trophy after sustaining an impact injury in the final Test at The Oval. He explained that the break was needed following a taxing six-month period. “There was no injury, just an impact. I will start bowling tomorrow. I’m feeling good. I have been playing constantly for six months, so my body needed a bit of rest,” Akash said.
Confirming his return to training, he stated that he will begin net sessions from Sunday, August 31, to regain rhythm ahead of the West Indies series. If fit, he is expected to be an automatic selection in the squad.
“When you go to England or Australia, it’s tough to play five matches. You have to be mentally and physically stronger,” the pacer said while reflecting on the challenges of long overseas tours. With his recovery complete, Akash Deep now looks forward to the Windies challenge, aiming to extend his breakthrough run in international cricket.
