Indian Sports Minister Anurag Thakur expressed gratitude towards Rohit Sharma for attending the inauguration of the third edition of Khel Mahakumbh in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh on March 5. Joined by head coach Rahul Dravid, Rohit’s presence aimed to inspire young athletes.
Despite the event being held 90 kilometers away from Dharamsala, where India is set to play the final Test against England on March 7, Thakur commended Rohit for his early morning journey from Delhi, highlighting his dedication.
“Rohit Sharma has come here from Delhi at 5.30 am to inaugurate our Khel Mahakumbh, I thank him wholeheartedly – If Rohit wanted, he could have refused to come here as 5th Test was from 7th but he came as he knew that the future of India would be here,” said Thakur at the event.

After attending the event in Bilaspur, Rohit made a grand entrance by joining the Indian squad in a chopper. The skipper’s remarkable performance in the ongoing series inspired the team’s comeback after trailing 0-1 following a loss in the series opener in Hyderabad. Facing the absence of key players like Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli, Rohit led the team strategically, handing debut caps to four players in the subsequent games. Under his captaincy, India clinched victory, resulting in England’s first series loss under Ben Stokes’ leadership.
Rohit himself contributed significantly with the bat, emerging as the fifth-highest run-scorer in the series with 297 runs at an average of 37.12, including one century and one fifty. With India leading 3-1, India is set to extend their dominance in Dharamsala, aiming to strengthen their position atop the World Test Championship points table.
