Arshdeep Singh might have his Test debut soon, as per reports, as the selectors are eyeing him for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2025.
India pacer Arshdeep Singh is on the verge of making his Test debut, with the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia being a potential launchpad for his red-ball career. The left-arm seamer has impressed in the shorter formats and has caught the eye of the national selectors.
However, before donning the whites for India, Arshdeep will need to showcase his skills in domestic cricket, starting with the Duleep Trophy in September. A strong performance in the premier domestic tournament could solidify his place in the squad for the Australian tour.
“Arshdeep has been exceptional in white-ball cricket. He could be given a chance in the Duleep Trophy to prepare for the Australia tour. He has the potential to be India’s trump card along with Bumrah in Australian conditions,” a source told PTI, as quoted by the Times of India. In 16 First-Class matches for Punjab, Arshdeep has scalped 49 wickets at an average of 31.97 and a strike rate of 59.6.
The selectors are also keen on bolstering the left-arm pace options in the white-ball setup. Khaleel Ahmed has been included in the squads for the Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka tours as part of this strategy. “In fact, the selectors are keen on another left-arm pace option in the white-ball side at least, which is why Khaleel Ahmed toured Zimbabwe and has been picked for both the ODIs and T20Is in Sri Lanka,” added the source.

India’s last tour of Australia in 2020–21 saw several young players making their mark, with the likes of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Mohammed Siraj emerging as significant players. For the unaware, the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy is scheduled to commence on November 22 with the first Test in Perth.
