Ashwin highlighted the difference between Gambhir’s relaxed coaching style and Dravid’s disciplined approach, explaining that while Dravid was meticulous about keeping things in order, Gambhir is more laid-back.
Ravichandran Ashwin has shed light on the contrasting coaching styles of Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid. According to Ashwin, Gambhir, who replaced Dravid as India’s head coach two months ago, brings a more relaxed approach to the dressing room. He mentioned that Gambhir is less particular about certain routines, unlike Dravid. The former coach preferred a structured environment where even small details mattered, like placing items in order.
“I think he is very relaxed. I want to call him ‘relaxed rancho’. There’s no pressure at all. In the morning, there will be a team huddle. He is very relaxed about that as well. He will be like, ‘Are you coming, please come’. It’s like that.,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“With Rahul bhai, as soon as we come, he wanted things in order. Even a bottle should be kept at a particular place at a particular time. He is very regimented. He wanted things in order. With Gambhir, he doesn’t expect all that. He has a relaxed order and will be a people’s man. He will capture everybody’s heart. I think he will be loved by the boys,” he added.
India’s First Test Under Gambhir Off to a Winning Start
Notably, Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the few players in the current Indian squad who has shared the dressing room with Gautam Gambhir as a player.
In Gambhir’s first series, India won the T20Is but lost the ODIs to Sri Lanka. The Chennai Test marked his debut as Test coach, where Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja played crucial roles. Their 199-run partnership saved India from 144 for 6, while Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling dismissed Bangladesh for 149. Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill added centuries in the second innings, helping India secure an upper hand. India will face Bangladesh in Kanpur for the final Test.
