Ashwin Retires From IPL

CSK to Bring Back Ravichandran R Ashwin, Plans to Retain Conway MS Dhoni

In a surprising move, Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from IPL, but he will continue exploring franchise cricket.

In a development that caught fans off guard on Wednesday morning, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 39-year-old confirmed the news with a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), bringing an end to a decorated IPL career that spanned over a decade.

Ashwin, who re-joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2025 season for a hefty INR 9.75 crore, revealed that he would no longer participate in future editions of the tournament. Instead, the Tamil Nadu cricketer expressed his intent to explore opportunities across different leagues worldwide.

“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin wrote on social media.

He added: “Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me.”

Ashwin’s IPL journey began in 2009 with Chennai Super Kings, where he established himself as one of the league’s premier spinners. Over the years, he also represented Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, before making his way back to CSK.

Across 221 matches, Ashwin delivered 4,710 balls, conceding 5,653 runs while claiming 187 wickets. His best bowling figures of 4/34 reflected his knack for breaking partnerships at crucial stages. With a bowling average of 30.23, an economy rate of 7.20, and a strike rate of 25.19, Ashwin carved his place among the most consistent performers in IPL history. While his IPL chapter has closed, Ashwin’s love for the game continues as he looks forward to new adventures in global franchise cricket.
