Former India cricketer Atul Wassan dismissed Gautam Gambhir’s controversial comments on AB de Villiers and Kevin Pietersen, saying he doesn’t take Gambhir seriously.
Former cricketer and current Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir criticized AB de Villiers and Kevin Pietersen for their remarks on Hardik Pandya’s captaincy in IPL 2024. Gambhir defended Pandya’s leadership, citing his success with Gujarat Titans.
“(AB) de Villiers and Pietersen’s records as captain are also not impressive. Except for his own scores, De Villiers has achieved nothing in the IPL. What was their own performance like when they were the captain? I don’t think, be it Kevin Pietersen or AB de Villiers, they had any performance in their career with leadership. Nothing. If you pick and see their records, I think they are worse than any other leader,” Gambhir said to Sportskeeda.
In response, ex-India cricketer Atul Wassan has dismissed Gambhir’s comments, labeling them as attention-seeking. Wassan expressed skepticism towards Gambhir’s statements, suggesting a pattern of controversial behavior.
“What are you saying? He is trying to create a controversy and he has a habit of it. I don’t take Gautam Gambhir seriously,” Wassan said to India News.
In 2017, Gambhir said he was not informed when Atul Wassan’s selection committee removed him as Delhi’s captain, highlighting tension between them. In 2019, after poor performances, Wassan’s committee replaced Rishabh Pant as captain with Pradeep Sangwan, bypassing Gambhir despite his seniority.
Notably, Former England captain Kevin Pietersen responded humbly to Gambhir’s criticism, admitting he was a “terrible captain,” having won only 11 out of 36 matches. Meanwhile, under Gambhir’s leadership, Kolkata is now a top contender for the title and has secured a top-table finish, giving them two chances to reach the final.
