Australia’s T20I squad faces setbacks as Marcus Stoinis is ruled out of the New Zealand tour due to a back issue, while Matthew Wade will miss the opening game for the birth of his third child.
Australia’s T20I campaign in New Zealand takes a hit as all-rounder Marcus Stoinis sits out due to a back problem, with Aaron Hardie stepping in as his replacement. Stoinis, who felt discomfort during the warm-up for the second T20I against the West Indies, tried to soldier on but had to miss the subsequent matches due to the persistent injury.
Despite recent struggles, Stoinis has been a key player, especially in the victorious 2021 T20 World Cup, showcasing his prowess with bat and ball.
Australia has been cautious with Stoinis’ injuries to avoid worsening them. Although talented, he’s faced repeated soft tissue issues, impacting his presence in key matches like the ODI World Cup. However, he aims to recover for the IPL starting in late March, a crucial preparation opportunity for the T20 World Cup.
With Stoinis out, Hardie, currently playing for Western Australia in a Sheffield Shield match, steps in. Hardie’s addition is aimed at strengthening Australia’s all-round options.
Meanwhile, vice-captain and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade will also sit out the series opener due to his third child’s arrival. Nevertheless, Wade is anticipated to rejoin the squad for subsequent matches in Auckland.
