After Pakistan’s poor T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, Babar Azam said he hasn’t thought about his future as captain and will leave the decision to the PCB, promising to step down openly if required.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam faces uncertainty about his future as team captain following their disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 performance. Despite leading Pakistan to a nervy win over Ireland in Florida, the team was eliminated in the group stage.
At a post-match press conference, Babar mentioned that he had not considered his future in the role and left the decision to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He acknowledged that he had previously resigned from the captaincy after the 2023 World Cup but accepted the PCB’s decision to reinstate him. Babar stated that he would openly discuss and accept any decision made by the PCB regarding his captaincy once he returned to Pakistan.
“When I gave up the captaincy [in 2023], I thought that I shouldn’t be doing it now, that’s why I left it and I announced it myself. Then when they gave it back to me, it was the decision of the PCB. When I go back, we will discuss all that has happened here,” Babar said.
“And if I have to leave the captaincy, I will announce it openly. I will not hide behind anything. Whatever happens will happen in the open. But for now, I have not thought about it. It is eventually PCB’s decision,” he added.
Pakistan’s middle order struggled throughout the campaign. Despite being the 2009 World T20 champions, they lost to India in a match where they needed only 48 runs off 48 balls with eight wickets in hand. Against Ireland, they collapsed to 62-6 while chasing 107 but managed to win by three wickets.
Babar also emphasized that the responsibility for the losses cannot be placed on a single individual, highlighting that every player has a role in the team. He acknowledged that the team did not perform well collectively and that they must accept and learn from their shortcomings.
“I told you that we did not lose this because of one particular person. We win and lose as a team. You are pointing out that [I am] the captain, but I cannot play in every player’s place. There are 11 players, and each of them has a role. That’s why they came here to play the World Cup. I think we have not been able to play well as a team. We have to settle down and accept that we didn’t play well as a team,” the skipper said.
As a player and as a captain, I am not going to single out. The fault lies with all 15. We will sit and review. As a captain, my responsibility is to give my feedback to the decision-makers. You can’t put the blame on one person. We didn’t play well as a team. We did well in patches. Everybody is disappointed. We are as disappointed as the fans. It is not one individual’s fault,” he concluded.
