Outraged fans lambasted Indian cricket’s team management for sidelining Iyer and Bishnoi in the 2nd T20I against South Africa, sparking widespread discussions on social media.
India commenced their South African tour in the second T20I clash at St George’s Park, Gqeberha after South Africa skipper Aiden Markram elected to field upon winning the toss. The Men in Blue made unexpected adjustments to their lineup, excluding Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, and Ravi Bishnoi. Gaikwad, the standout performer from the recent Australia T20I series, was sidelined due to illness, according to the BCCI’s update on social media.
Nonetheless, the absence of Bishnoi and Iyer bewildered fans. Iyer, previously the team’s vice-captain, had showcased his prowess with a brilliant half-century in the last game against Australia, while Bishnoi, named Player of the Series, had earlier topped the wicket charts with nine dismissals in the same series and soared to the top of the T20I bowlers’ rankings.
Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav took the place of Bishnoi. Additionally, Tilak Varma was picked over Shreyas Iyer, sparking reactions in X from fans over the exclusion of Bishnoi and Iyer from the playing XI.
