R. Ashwin has been accused of ball-tampering in the TNPL after Madurai Panthers claimed his team used chemically treated towels to alter the ball.
Indian spin veteran R. Ashwin has been accused of ball-tampering during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) game. The Madurai Panthers lodged an official complaint against Ashwin’s team, Dindigul Dragons, following their June 14 match.
The Panthers claimed the Dragons used chemically treated towels to alter the ball’s condition, making it heavier and producing a metallic sound when hit. TNPL officials have asked for proof before taking further action. TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan confirmed receiving the complaint but emphasized the need for evidence.
The league may form an independent committee if the allegations hold merit. However, without solid proof, Madurai could face penalties for making unsubstantiated claims. Meanwhile, Ashwin has not yet responded publicly
“They have filed a complaint, which we have acknowledged. Though they have to lodge any complaints within 24 hours of the game, we have still accepted it and have asked them to furnish proof of their allegations. We will be forming an independent committee if we find there is any truth to their allegations. Without sufficient evidence, it is wrong to put forth such allegations against a player and another franchise. If they don’t provide any evidence, then Madurai will face due sanctions,” Prasanna was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Notably, in the match, Madurai scored 150/8 in 20 overs, but Dindigul chased the target in just 12.3 overs, losing only one wicket. Though Ravichandran Ashwin didn’t take a wicket, he contributed 49 runs.
TNPL rules mandate that drying the ball must be done with league-issued towels under umpire supervision. TNPL officials have asked Madurai to submit evidence to proceed with any formal investigation.
