Tom Curran, an England player for Sydney Sixers in BBL|13, received a four-match ban due to an altercation with an umpire during warm-up in Launceston, leading to an intimidation charge.
Tom Curran received a four-match ban in BBL|13 due to a dispute with an umpire in Launceston before Sydney Sixers’ game against Hobart Hurricanes. Found guilty of intimidation, the club plans to contest the ban following the altercation during Curran’s warm-up run-up on December 11.
During a match break, the fourth umpire intervened when Curran attempted practice runs on the UTAS Stadium pitch. Initially, he ran on the pitch, then shifted to the other end for another run. The umpire positioned near the stumps signaled Curran to stay away, but Curran gestured for the umpire to move. Subsequently, Curran ran towards the umpire standing in the bowling crease, who sidestepped to avoid a collision. Match referee Bob Parry charged Curran with a Level 3 offense under Cricket Australia’s code of conduct.

Curran contested the charge of intimidation but was deemed guilty, resulting in a four-match suspension in the BBL. This penalty means he’ll be absent in the Sixers’ upcoming games against Adelaide Strikers, Stars, Thunder, and Heat.
Sydney Sixers’ Head, Rachael Haynes, confirmed their intention to vigorously appeal the decision, emphasizing that Curran didn’t intentionally intimidate an official. Haynes also expressed the club’s support for Curran and their plan to challenge the ruling based on legal advice.
Curran defended himself, stating that practicing his run-up was his routine, yet he ran towards the stumps where an official stood. If his suspension holds, it will impact the Sixers, having planned for him in nine matches before heading to UAE’s ILT20.
