BCCI Announces New Player Retention Rules, Auction Purse, and More
The IPL Governing Council introduced new player regulations for the 2025-2027 seasons, including retention rules, auction guidelines, and a match fee structure.
Following discussions with franchise owners in July, the IPL Governing Council (GC) convened in Bengaluru to finalise player regulations for the TATA IPL 2025-2027 seasons. Several key decisions were made during the meeting, shaping the structure for player retention, auctions, and match fees.
As per the new guidelines, IPL franchises will be allowed to retain up to six players from their existing squads. This can be done either through direct retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option. The GC has left it to the franchises to decide the combination of retentions and RTMs. Of the six retained players, a maximum of five can be capped players (Indian or overseas), while up to two uncapped players can be included.
Auction Purse Of INR 120 Crore, Salary Cap of 146 Crore Announced
For the IPL 2025 auction, the franchises’ auction purse has been set at INR 120 crore. The total salary cap, which includes the auction purse, incremental performance pay, and match fees, will progressively increase over the next three years. The salary cap for IPL 2025 will be INR 146 crore, followed by INR 151 crore in 2026, and INR 157 crore in 2027. Previously, in 2024, the total salary cap stood at INR 110 crore.
For the first time in IPL history, a match fee has been introduced. Each playing member, including the Impact Player, will now receive INR 7.5 lakhs per match. This amount will be in addition to the player’s contracted salary, adding a new layer of financial incentives.
Another key regulation stipulates that overseas players must register for the Big Auction. Failure to do so will result in ineligibility for the following year’s auction. Additionally, any player who withdraws after being selected in the auction but before the start of the season will face a two-year ban from both the tournament and future auctions.
Impact Player Rule to Continue
The IPL GC also clarified that any capped Indian player who has not played in the starting XI in international cricket over the last five years or does not hold a central contract with the BCCI will be classified as an uncapped player. This rule applies only to Indian players.
Lastly, the Impact Player Regulation will continue to be part of the IPL for the upcoming 2025–2027 cycle, ensuring teams can make tactical substitutions during matches.
