After much anticipation, the BCCI finally announced Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian Men’s Cricket Team.

In a significant development, Gautam Gambhir has been named the head coach of the senior India men’s cricket team, as announced by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on July 9th. The 42-year-old Gambhir’s first assignment will be the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is, starting on July 27.

Gambhir succeeds Rahul Dravid, who served as head coach from November 2022 to June 2024. Dravid stepped down following India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in the USA and West Indies. Under Dravid’s leadership, India reached the final of the ICC World Test Championship, competed in the 50-over World Cup in 2023, and secured the T20 World Cup title in 2024.

“In his new role as Head Coach of Team India, Gambhir will be responsible for overseeing the development and performance of the Indian cricket team. His focus will be on developing a culture of excellence, discipline, and teamwork while also nurturing young talent and preparing the team for future challenges on the global stage,” stated the BCCI in a media release.

Jay Shah also congratulated the Southpaw on his appointment. “It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian cricket forward,” Shah wrote on X.

Speaking about his appointment, Gambhir expressed his gratitude on X. “India is my identity, and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been: to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians, and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true,” concluded Gambhir.

Significantly, although Gambhir does not have previous coaching experience, he has served as a mentor for multiple IPL teams, including the Kolkata Knight Riders, who won the championship this year. As a player, he was part of India’s World Cup-winning teams in 2007 and 2011. Gambhir’s international career spanned from 2004 to 2016, during which he played in 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is.
