The BCCI called a meeting with IPL franchise owners to discuss key IPL policies, including player retentions for the upcoming mega-auction.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called a meeting with the owners of all ten Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises. Scheduled for April 16th in Ahmedabad, the meeting will take place alongside the Gujarat Titans vs. Delhi Capitals match at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
While franchise CEOs and operational teams might accompany the owners, reports suggest that the meeting itself is designated for owners only. BCCI president Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah, and IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal are expected to attend. The correspondence regarding the meeting is believed to have been sent by Hemang Amin, the CEO of the IPL.
The agenda for the meeting remains undisclosed, but the sudden nature of the invitation has led cricket insiders to believe the BCCI will address critical policy decisions, particularly concerning the upcoming mega-auction.

“They will discuss the way forward for the IPL,” said a source familiar with the matter, as quoted by Cricbuzz. A key point of discussion is likely to be the number of players each team can retain before the auction. This topic has sparked debate within the IPL ecosystem, with owners holding differing viewpoints. With no clear consensus on the number, the BCCI is reportedly aiming to find a solution through negotiation.
The mega-auction, typically held every three years, is a crucial event for IPL franchises. It allows them to rebuild their squads by bidding on players released from their existing contracts. The number of players a team can retain directly impacts their auction strategy and budget allocation.
A higher retention limit allows teams to hold onto core players, potentially creating more stability. However, a lower limit would force franchises to rely more heavily on the auction, potentially leading to a more dynamic and unpredictable league.
The BCCI’s decision on this issue will be closely watched by fans and franchises alike. It is expected that other policy decisions related to players’s salaries might also be discussed during the meeting.
