Streamlined Auction Process
The BCCI trimmed the IPL auction register from 1,574 to 574 players and outlined an accelerated bidding process to start after 116 players are called on November 24-25.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has significantly reduced the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction register, narrowing it from 1,574 names to 574 players. However, not all players on the list are expected to be bid upon during the mega auction on November 24 and 25, as the BCCI plans to introduce an accelerated process after 116 players are presented.
In a communication sent to franchises on Friday evening, the BCCI outlined its strategy for the accelerated rounds. “For your planning purposes, please note, subject to timings, it is envisaged that the accelerated process will start after player No. 116. The first accelerated process will cover all the players from 117-574. Franchises will be asked to nominate a set number of players from this group by 10 PM on the evening of November 24,” the BCCI stated.
Once this batch of players is presented, teams will have the opportunity to submit names of unsold or unpresented players from the full list of 574 for another accelerated round. Detailed instructions about the process will be provided during the auction briefing on November 23, 2024.
Division of Marquee Player Sets
The auction will begin with marquee sets, followed by capped players categorized by specializations—batters, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers, and spinners—and will then proceed to uncapped players in similar groups.
According to Cricbuzz, the marquee players have been divided into two sets. The first set includes Jos Buttler, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh, and Mitchell Starc. The second set features Yuzvendra Chahal, Liam Livingstone, David Miller, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj.
However, some franchises expressed surprise at the limited number of marquee players, as they had expected around 20 instead of the 12 listed. Notably, the final list also includes 39 additional players who were nominated for inclusion by franchises.
