MS Dhoni yet to decide on BCCI role
MS Dhoni was reportedly offered an all-format mentorship job by the BCCI but was unlikely to accept it while Gautam Gambhir remained India’s head coach.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has offered decorated former captain MS Dhoni an all-format mentorship role. However, according to a report by CricBlogger, he is unlikely to take up the position until Gautam Gambhir continues as head coach across formats, owing to their past differences.
The report stated that the role is “broad” and would also cover women’s and junior cricket teams, with the aim of grooming the next generation of Indian players. The BCCI believes Dhoni’s presence could be highly influential. Dhoni had earlier served as mentor during the 2021 T20 World Cup, and this time, the board has made a fresh approach to bring the Ranchi stalwart on board.
However, Dhoni reportedly wants to avoid “overlapping responsibilities” with Gambhir due to their “history of differences dating back to their playing days.” At the same time, he is said to be more focused on preparing for the next season with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which might be his last in the IPL.
At 44, Dhoni has continued to push the limits of age to play for CSK. He has never accepted a full-time coaching role, though speculations around him mentoring CSK have often surfaced.

Interestingly, Gambhir also had no prior coaching experience before becoming India’s all-format coach. But he found success as mentor with Lucknow Super Giants and then guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title.
Currently, Gambhir is at a critical stage of his coaching journey. Under him, India’s ODI and T20I sides have continued the progress made during Rahul Dravid’s tenure, winning the 2025 Champions Trophy.
On the Test front, however, results have been mixed. Despite drawing a recent series in England, the team has struggled for consistency, suffering heavy defeats in Australia and even facing a whitewash at home. While the drawn series has given Gambhir some breathing space, it remains to be seen how he manages the enormous responsibility of leading India across formats.
