The BCCI announced applications will be open for a new Indian cricket team head coach as Rahul Dravid’s tenure will expire in June.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that they will be searching for a new head coach for the Indian cricket team. This news comes as Rahul Dravid’s current contract is set to expire in June 2024.
Dravid was appointed head coach in November 2021 and received a contract extension after India’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, it appears the BCCI is not offering him another automatic extension.
As reported by PTI, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said, “We will call for applications in the next few days. Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end. He has to reapply if he has to continue. We are looking for a long-term coach, for three years,” as saying by the agency. This move opened the door for other candidates, both domestic and international.
The BCCI also rejected the possibility of having separate coaches for different cricket formats, unlike some other cricket boards. “There is no precedent of different coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. Besides, we have several players who are all-format players. There are many common players across formats such as Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma,” said Shah.
The vacant post of one national selector is also expected to be filled soon as Shah said, “A few interviews for the selector’s post have already happened. We will announce it soon.”

In addition to the coaching change, the BCCI is also reviewing the controversial “Impact Player” rule introduced in the IPL. While some see it as a way to add excitement, others, including Indian captain Rohit Sharma, have criticized it.
“Impact player was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL. We will discuss with the stakeholders – franchises and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It’s not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule,” Shah concluded.
