BCCI Set To Talk With Kohli, Rohit
The BCCI was set to hold discussions with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma regarding their ODI future as part of long-term planning for the 2027 World Cup.
Even as pictures and videos of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s intense training sessions ahead of their potential India return in October continue to circulate on social media, a fresh report suggested that the BCCI will soon meet the two stalwarts to discuss their international futures.
According to Dainik Jagran, the outcome of these talks will decide the future direction of India’s ODI team. Reports have also linked Shreyas Iyer as a possible successor to Rohit Sharma as ODI captain. However, the final call depends on whether Rohit wishes to continue in the format and for how long.
The next ODI World Cup will be held in Africa in 2027, and the BCCI wants a long-term leader as India chase their first title since 2011. India had come close in 2023 but lost the final to Australia. Both Kohli and Rohit have already stepped away from Tests and T20Is, with the selection committee overseeing smooth transitions in those formats. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, who guided India to two ICC trophies, has had his contract extended until June 2026.

By the time the next World Cup arrives, Kohli will be nearing 39 and Rohit will be 40. Another report indicated that the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia could potentially be their last in the format.
Earlier this month, PTI also reported that the BCCI wanted to proceed with a clear roadmap for 2027. “Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time,” a BCCI source told PTI.
