BCCI Chairman Arun Dhamal revealed that IPL 2024 is scheduled to likely start on March 22 in Chennai, with the schedule expected to be announced in two phases.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is slated to kick off on Friday, March 22, as per recent announcements by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Arun Dhamal, the chairman of the IPL’s governing council, disclosed that the league’s schedule will be announced in two phases.
Initially, the schedule for the first two weeks of the tournament will be released, with the remaining fixtures contingent upon the scheduling of the 2024 general elections.
MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is likely to host the opening match. This approach ensures flexibility in coordinating IPL matches with other significant events, with BCCI closely monitoring developments to adjust the latter half of the tournament accordingly, as reported by Sportstar.
“The plan is to start the tournament on March 22 in Chennai. We are keeping a tab on the situation and since the dates for the general elections are announced, we can plan the later half of the tournament accordingly,” Dhumal was quoted as saying.
In a tradition similar to IPL 2023, which began with Chennai Super Kings facing Gujarat Titans, followed by the remaining teams competing in doubleheaders over the weekend, IPL 2024 is set to follow a similar pattern.
With the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 final scheduled for Sunday, March 17, the subsequent weekend is earmarked for the IPL’s initial five matches.
Despite prior speculations of relocating the tournament due to the general elections, Dhamal also reassured that the entire IPL 2024 will be hosted in India, comprising 74 matches, including the playoffs.
