Brad Haddin praised Virat Kohli for raising India’s cricket standards while highlighting Rohit Sharma’s exceptional tactical understanding and ability to inspire players.

Brad Haddin, former Australia wicketkeeper-batter, acknowledged Virat Kohli’s transformative impact on India’s cricket approach. He praised Kohli for instigating a fitness revolution within the national team and instilling a mindset where India never shied away from challenges, significantly altering their style of play.

“I thought Virat changed the way India prepared for their cricket. They became really ready. He held his playgroup to a high standard and he’s one of those captains who said I’m not going to get you to do anything that I’m not doing myself,” Haddin told LiSTNR podcast.

“You’ve seen the athleticism in the Indian cricket team change, and their mentality towards it. They were feeling energetic – their fitness and they dived when Kohli took over. And when they were up for the contest against Australia, he didn’t back down. He changed the modern game a lot in India and how India played,” he added.

Kohli’s captaincy saw India achieve remarkable success, including Test series victories against Australia, England, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. Despite reaching the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-finals and qualifying for the World Test Championship in 2021, India fell short in crucial moments.

On the other hand, Haddin praised the present skipper Rohit Sharma, describing him as a leader who connects well with his players. He emphasized Rohit’s tactical brilliance, highlighting his successful tenure as captain in the IPL for over a decade since Ricky Ponting’s departure. Additionally, he commended Rohit for fostering a strong team dynamic, where players rally behind him.

“But on the other hand, Rohit Sharma is as good a captain tactically that you’ll see. He’s had a lot of success in the IPL. He’s captained there since Ricky Ponting left, and that would have been over 10 years. The players play for him and tactically, he’s as good as you’ll get in India and non-subcontinent conditions,” Haddin concluded.
