West Indies named Brandon King as interim captain for their upcoming T20I series against South Africa due to several players’ IPL commitments.
Brandon King has been named the interim captain of the West Indies for their upcoming three-match T20I series against South Africa starting later this week. King’s appointment comes due to the unavailability of regular skipper Rovman Powell, who is currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs alongside several other West Indies stars.
Powell is joined by Shimron Hetmyer (Rajasthan Royals), Andre Russell and Sherfane Rutherford (Kolkata Knight Riders), and Alzarri Joseph (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) who will all miss the series due to their IPL commitments. The Indies have also opted to rest Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran despite them not being involved in the IPL playoffs.
Shamar Joseph, who played a limited role with the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, has been included in the squad and could make his T20I debut. Notably, both Joseph and Rutherford could be added to the squad later if their respective IPL teams, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, do not reach the IPL final.
“We haven’t played together as a team since the Australia series, but we just completed a very intense training camp in Antigua. Now we have the chance to integrate some of our players returning from the IPL and build some momentum as a group going into the World Cup,” said White Ball head coach Daren Sammy.

West Indies Squad: Brandon King (C), Roston Chase, Alick Athanaze, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Mathew Forde, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh.
