West Indies joined the global movement for gender equality in cricket, announcing a commitment to achieve pay equity for women’s cricketers.
West Indies brings positive news for women cricketers by committing to gender pay equity, aligning with global cricket nations like New Zealand, India, Australia, South Africa, and England. The cricket board, Cricket West Indies (CWI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, January 25, marking a substantial stride toward equal pay for all players regardless of gender.
Effective from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2027, this MoU includes comprehensive agreements on player remuneration and updated terms and conditions, reinforcing the West Indies’ commitment to fostering gender equality within its cricket system.
“The MOU outlines plans to achieve parity in international and regional match fees, international captain’s allowances, international team prize money and regional individual prize money for all West Indies cricketers by 1 October 2027,” the CWI said in a statement.
Recognizing the substantial contributions of female cricketers, President of CWI, Dr. Kishore Shallow expressed the move’s significance in creating a more inclusive and progressive cricket framework.
“This is a historic day for West Indies cricket. As we overhaul the compensation structures and align performance grading, we are taking a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and progressive cricket framework. This step reflects our unwavering commitment to gender pay equality in cricket and acknowledges the immense contributions of female players to West Indies cricket,” Kishore told the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Alongside revamping compensation structures and aligning performance grading, CWI previously enhanced travel policies for the West Indies Senior Women’s team, ensuring parity with the men’s team.
“Today, with the signing of this MOU, we take another significant stride in narrowing the gender gap within our cricketing community,” he added.
