Brendon McCullum expressed optimism about Ben Stokes’ return from injury for the India Tests, praising his impressive fitness and work ethic.
As England gears up for a highly anticipated five-game Test series against India starting on January 25, a cloud of uncertainty hovers over the availability of skipper Ben Stokes Test Returns for the opening match at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. The 32-year-old, recovering from knee surgery in November 2023 and refraining from bowling since July of the same year, faces doubts about his participation in the crucial first Test.
Head coach Brendon McCullum, optimistic about Stokes’ fitness, emphasized a cautious approach. Despite this optimism, the England camp remains deliberate about delaying the decision on Stokes’ involvement until the last possible moment. McCullum emphasized the team’s patient approach, reassuring that they are in no rush to determine Stokes’ match readiness for the Hyderabad Test.
“He looks like a greyhound. He’s put the work in, everyone knows his work ethic is phenomenal. I’ve seen him running around and I think he’s good to go. We’ll obviously make that call as late as what we need to. But he’s put all the work in, and we’ll just have to wait and see,” McCullum said to BBC.
The coach also addressed the absence of star batter Harry Brook from the India series due to personal reasons. McCullum emphasized the team’s unwavering support for Brook, acknowledging the priority of family in such challenging times.
Wishing Brook and his family the best, McCullum indicated the possibility of Brook’s return later in the tour. For now, the focus remains on allowing Brook the space and time he needs to be with his family during this difficult period.
