West Indies legend Brian Lara identified the lack of a final plan as India’s weakness in ICC tournaments.
Legendary West Indies batter Brian Lara has identified a crucial weakness in the Indian cricket team, which is their lack of a clear strategy in high-pressure ICC events.
Despite boasting a wealth of talented players, India has struggled to convert their dominance into trophies, failing to win an ICC tournament since their Champions Trophy victory in 2013. Lara believes the missing piece is a well-defined plan for navigating the knockout stages.
“Looking from the outside, in previous cups, be it T20s or 50-over tournaments, I just feel that they [India] lack that final plan. It doesn’t matter how many superstars you have. How are you going to approach this World Cup? What plans are you going to have in place? How are you going to structure your innings?” Lara said on Star Sports.
Brian Lara expressed hope that coach Rahul Dravid can address this issue and guide the team towards a clear strategy for winning the upcoming T20 World Cup.
On the positive side, Lara acknowledged India’s immense talent pool. “India is blessed with a lot of talent. You could pick another 15 players and they would still be among the favourites,” added Lara. He highlighted the team’s experience and balance in batting and bowling, with Jasprit Bumrah leading a potentially strong pace attack.

While acknowledging the team’s experience, Lara did raise a question about the spin bowling contingent, considering the conditions in the Caribbean and the United States. He also noted the presence of a few new faces alongside the core group that has featured in previous World Cups.
“The fast bowlers will, of course, be led by Jasprit Bumrah. But I believe it’s a very experienced team. It’s a team you have seen on paper before in previous World Cups, with maybe the addition of a couple of new names,” concluded the ex-cricketer.
