Snehashish Ganguly, President of the Cricket Association of Bengal, has urged patience with India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir despite the team’s recent struggles. India’s performances in ODIs and Tests have raised concerns, with significant losses in recent series.
The three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka marked India’s first defeat to the team in 27 years. A home Test series loss to New Zealand ended a 24-year streak without a whitewash, while the Border-Gavaskar Trophy saw India’s first series defeat to Australia in a decade.
Gambhir, who guided Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024, has faced criticism, but Ganguly believes his previous success highlights his potential. Reports of internal rifts within the dressing room have added to the pressure, but Ganguly remains confident. He emphasized that Gambhir needs more time to adapt and deliver results.
“I feel happy because of his approach. As a coach, he got success for KKR after 12 years. We should give him some time. It has been some months since he has been handling the team after Rahul Dravid,” Ganguly told ANI.
In other news, Mohammed Shami is set to make his international comeback during the upcoming white-ball series against England, marking his return after more than a year. The series will serve as India’s preparation for the Champions Trophy 2025. The five-match T20I series will kick off at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, followed by a three-match ODI series. Senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are also expected to rejoin the squad.
Shami recently impressed in domestic cricket, showcasing fitness and sharp form. The return of the Bengal pacer has created excitement among fans, particularly in Kolkata, where the crowd will cheer him on. Cricket Association of Bengal President Snehashish Ganguly expressed confidence in Shami’s readiness, highlighting his recent performances as a promising sign for the team.
“He came back after a year and bowled very well for Bengal. I was observing his bowling, and he seemed to be in great shape. He looks like the old Mohammed Shami—fit and raring to go,” Ganguly added.
The series begins on January 22, with expectations running high for India’s performance.
