Australia is optimistic that Cameron Green will be fit to play as a batter in the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June.
Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, expressed optimism that Cameron Green will recover in time to play as a batter in the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June. Green was sidelined for the 2024/25 summer after a recurrence of a lower back stress fracture, his fifth such injury. He underwent surgery in October 2024 in New Zealand.
Recently, Green shared a video of himself running and training in Perth, indicating positive progress in his recovery. Bailey confirmed the selectors’ hopes for Green’s return as a batter, as Australia prepares for the upcoming series.
“Very hopeful he(Cameron Green) will be available as a batsman for the World Test Championship final,” Bailey told reporters.
Bailey also addressed Mitchell Marsh’s exclusion from the squad, following a lackluster performance in the India series. However, he stressed that Marsh’s Test career is far from over and that his skill set remains valuable, particularly for the upcoming Ashes series.
“I don’t necessarily see it as the end of the road for him. I think Mitch at his best and with a longer-term view of potentially what the Ashes may look like and what England may throw at us, I think he’s got a skill set that suits there. Not taking away from the fact that at some stage clearly we’re going to have the return of Cameron Green as well into the team. But unlike some, (the selectors) are probably not as glass half empty around where that leaves Mitch,” Bailey added.
Pace-bowling all-rounder Beau Webster, who impressed on his Test debut with scores of 57 and 39 not out, along with a wicket and two catches in Sydney, is also expected to take on a significant bowling role in Sri Lanka.
“(Webster’s spin) probably wasn’t something that came up as a factor in selection. I think we’ve got plenty of spin options there. It’s a nice fourth or fifth bow for Beau to have up his sleeve, but I don’t necessarily think that we’ll be heading down that path,” George Bailey concluded.
