Canada sealed its first-ever win in the T20 World Cup by defeating Ireland by 12 runs.
Batting first, Canada struggled to find momentum in their innings. The openers and middle order failed to impress, leaving them in a risky position. However, a valiant late partnership of 75 runs between Nicholas Kirton and Shreyas Movva revived their hopes. Their efforts propelled the team to a respectable total of 137 runs.
Ireland’s bowlers, led by Craig Young and Mark Adair with early strikes, kept the pressure on throughout the innings. Barry McCarthy also chipped in with two crucial wickets, restricting Canada to a sub-140 total.
Chasing a modest target, Ireland’s batting woes came to the fore. Openers Andrew Balbirnie and skipper Paul Stirling failed to provide a solid foundation, and the middle order crumbled under pressure from the Canadian bowling attack. Only George Dockrell and Mark Adair showed any fightback, but their efforts fell short.
Needing 17 runs off the final over, Ireland’s hopes rested on Mark Adair. However, Canadian bowler Jeremy Gordon held his nerve, dismissing Adair to seal a thrilling 12-run victory for Canada. Notably, Dillon Heyliger also chipped in with two wickets for Canada.
