Pat Cummins expressed his love for Test cricket, wishing for wider viewership and acknowledging the strength and popularity of cricket in the present moment.
As the cricketing world anticipates David Warner’s retirement from Test cricket, discussions have surged about the format’s future amid the ascendancy of shorter versions and franchise leagues. Australian captain Pat Cummins echoed these concerns, expressing worry about Test cricket’s future and hoping for increased interest in the traditional format.
Despite the ongoing fervor in Australia’s current Test series against Pakistan, Cummins remains apprehensive about the global outlook for Test cricket. While acknowledging the monumental support for the sport, Cummins, a fervent Test cricket enthusiast, highlighted his wish for a broader appreciation of the longest format in cricket.
“It’s a tough one. Every summer feels bigger than the last here in Australia, but obviously going overseas, that’s not the case. In some regards, I am a little bit worried at times, but at the same time T20 cricket has never had more supporters and I don’t think there have been more supporters in the world watching cricket. As a Test cricket lover, I wish everybody was watching Test cricket, but I’ve never seen cricket stronger than what it is at the moment,” Cummins said to Cricbuzz.
Cummins also highlighted the imminent “Warner Week” and predicted a quicker overhaul in the team’s top order in ODIs compared to Test cricket. He underlined Marnus Labuschagne’s youthful presence amidst a predominantly 30-plus-aged Test squad for the upcoming Sydney game, where Labuschagne stands as the only player in his 20s.
The skipper anticipates a gradual transition in the team, acknowledging the scarcity of immediate alterations with no Test matches scheduled until the next summer.
