BCCI, CA, and ECB are discussing the revival of the Champions League T20 (CLT20) tournament, which concluded its last edition in 2014 after six seasons of featuring champion T20 teams.
Cricket Australia (CA), England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are currently engaged in discussions to revive the Champions League T20 (CLT20) tournament, which ran for six seasons starting from 2009 and featured top T20 teams worldwide competing for the prestigious title.
Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins recently shared insights on the tournament’s potential revival, describing it as “ahead of its time” during its previous run. Cummins noted that the T20 landscape has since matured, making it ripe for the return of the CLT20.
Active conversations indicate a keen interest in bringing back the tournament, which last saw Chennai Super Kings emerging victorious over Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 final.
“I think the Champions League was ahead of its time. The T20 landscape wasn’t mature enough at that point. I think it is now. I know that there’s active conversations between Cricket Australia, the ECB, and the BCCI about the Champions League,” Cummins was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
“It’s just trying to find a window as to when you actually play that, because you’ve also got all the ICC tournaments as well. It may be that the first iteration of the Champions League will be of the women… [it may involve cricketers playing in] the WPL, the Hundred and the WBBL,” he added.
Expressing the importance of resurrecting the tournament, Cummins also highlighted the need to find a suitable window in the Future Tours Programme (FTP) for its scheduling.
The last CLT20 edition featured three Indian teams, two each from Australia and South Africa, and one each from Pakistan, the West Indies, and New Zealand. Notably, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings were the most successful, each clinching two titles, while New South Wales Blues and Sydney Sixers won the inaugural edition in 2009 and 2012, respectively.
