Cheteshwar Pujara on duo’s international future
Cheteshwar Pujara said he did not need to advise Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on their ODI World Cup 2027 plans.
Legendary India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20Is on June 29, 2024, before stepping away from Test cricket in May 2025. Since their exit from the longest format, fans and experts have repeatedly questioned what the future holds for the two greats in international cricket.
While it is widely believed that both want to represent India in the 2027 ODI World Cup, their place in the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) long-term plans remains uncertain. With more than two years left for the tournament, several former cricketers feel that age and fitness could be challenges for Rohit and Kohli going forward.
However, former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara expressed confidence in the duo’s judgment, insisting they do not need any advice. “I don’t need to give any advice because they are some of the best players in white-ball cricket. Even if they are playing just one format, they are experienced enough to know what is expected of them,” said Pujara during The Indian Express Idea Exchange.
“They are such talented players. Look at the records Virat and Rohit have. They also know when the right time is for them to call it quits. They understand the level of commitment required, and if they are fit enough, they can carry on playing international cricket for a long time,” he added.

Rohit and Kohli last featured in ODIs for India on March 9, 2025, against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In that period, both made significant contributions in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Rohit scored 76 runs in the final against Pakistan and bagged the Player of the Match award, while Kohli registered a crucial 80-plus knock in the semifinal against Australia on March 4.
The star duo is expected to return for India in October 2025 during the three-match ODI series against Australia. The Men in Blue will also play another three-match ODI series against South Africa in December 2025.
