Chris Gayle backed adding pace sensation Shamar Joseph to the West Indies’ T20 World Cup squad, highlighting the potential benefit of having both Josephs, including Alzarri, in the lineup.
Chris Gayle, the former West Indian cricketer, has endorsed the inclusion of Shamar Joseph in the West Indies squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Despite Joseph’s limited experience in domestic T20 matches, Gayle emphasized his impressive performance during his debut Test series in Australia, where he showcased exceptional bowling skills despite injury.
Gayle highlighted Joseph’s potential to form a strong pace duo with Alzarri Joseph, providing valuable backup options for the team. His endorsement comes as the West Indies cricket selection committee prepares to finalize the squad for the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in the USA and the West Indies from June 1 to June 29.
“He’s (Shamar Joseph) strong, he should be in the squad. We already have Alzarri Joseph, so to have the two Josephs there will be great. Both might not play at the same time , but we would need him in this squad just in case anybody picks up an injury. It’s a good headache to have for the selectors,” said Gayle as quoted by TOI.
Gayle then praised the balanced Windies squad led by Rovman Powell, emphasizing the importance of key players like Andre Russell, Jason Holder, and Nicholas Pooran. He highlighted their vital roles in the team’s success in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
The former cricketer further highlighted the T20 format’s impact on cricket, noting its influence on ODIs and Test matches. He emphasized how batters have become more aggressive, scoring quickly and chasing big totals comfortably. According to Gayle, this shift is evident in Test matches where teams score 300 runs in a day, a trend attributed to T20 cricket. He also mentioned the changes in 50-over cricket, where teams can score and chase down 400 runs, attributing these transformations to the influence of T20 cricket on the game’s dynamics.
