Mike Hussey offered clarity on MS Dhoni’s future in the IPL, expressing hope for his continued presence while acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding Dhoni’s retirement plans.
MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings’ former captain and Indian cricket icon, has been a constant force in the IPL. But whispers of his retirement after IPL 2024 have swirled around him. However, recently, CSK coach Mike Hussey has offered some clarity for Dhoni’s fans.
On ESPN’s Around the Wicket show, Hussey addressed Dhoni’s recent batting role, which has been reduced to a pinch hitter. He explained that Dhoni has transitioned into a pure finisher since last season, typically coming in for the final 10–12 balls to maximise his impact.
“I know fans probably want to see him batting a little bit higher in the order, but that (the knee surgery) is why we have had to manage him a little bit, and he only comes in at the back end. But there has been no one better at being able to come in and hit the ball so cleanly from ball one than MS. He has been phenomenal,” said Hussey.
Hussey explained that Dhoni’s success with limited deliveries comes from his dedication. He arrives at training early and puts in the extra work by facing a lot of balls in the nets.
“He is still batting so well. He does prepare well; he gets into the camp very early and hits a lot of balls. He has been in good touch all season. I guess we just have to try to manage him from the body side of things. He had knee surgery after the last season. So he has been managing that from the initial stage of the tournament,” Hussey added.
MS Dhoni’s future in the IPL remains a mystery.even to the Chennai camp. Chennai Super Kings batting coach, Michael Hussey, expressed his hope that Dhoni would continue playing for a few more years.
“From a personal point of view, I hope he keeps going for another couple of years. He keeps his cards very, very close to his chest,” Hussey admitted, implying that only Dhoni knows when he will quit.
Adding to the intrigue, Hussey playfully suggested that Dhoni enjoys keeping everyone guessing. “He likes to sort of build the drama a little bit as well. So I wouldn’t expect a decision anytime soon,” the coach concluded.
