India’s first innings against New Zealand in the World Cup 2023 semi-final witnessed Kohli’s historic 50th century, drawing praise from David Beckham, who hailed the timing of his visit to India.
In the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 semifinal clash at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Team India set a formidable target of 397 runs for New Zealand to chase. Virat Kohli shined bright by securing his 50th ODI century, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 49-century record, and also crossed 700 runs in this World Cup edition, setting another milestone.
Amidst this marquee clash, renowned English footballer David Beckham graced the event. Beckham, thrilled by witnessing Kohli’s historic achievement, expressed his delight by saying, “I’m in India at the very right time. I’ve seen the Diwali, and today I saw Virat Kohli bat and reach his 50th century.”
Earlier, Rohit Sharma, after winning the toss, chose to bat, initiating a powerful start for India. Rohit and Shubman Gill crafted a solid opening stand of 71 runs. However, the skipper departed after a brisk 47 off 29 balls by Tim Southee’s delivery.
Gill, despite retiring hurt at 72, played a crucial role, while Kohli and Shreyas Iyer took charge of the innings. Iyer’s explosive 105 off 70 deliveries marked the fastest century in a World Cup knockout game. He equaled the record for most sixes in a World Cup knockout game alongside Gilchrist and Ponting. Contributions from KL Rahul (39) and Gill’s unbeaten 80 steered India to an imposing total.
