David Lloyd stirred controversy by calling Team India a “predictable team” unlikely to be a major threat in the T20 World Cup.
With the T20 World Cup 2024 just around the corner, Team India faces a challenge: overcoming their recent failures and clinching their second T20 world title. The tournament, co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies, kicks off on June 2nd. India, winners in 2007, have not reached the finals since exiting the league stage (2021) and semi-finals (2022).
Notably, former England cricketer David Lloyd has recently made some controversial remarks about India’s chances. Speaking to talkSPORT, Lloyd labelled India a “predictable team” lacking the necessary spark to be a major threat.
“The shackles are not off. I would think the opposition would accept the quality. Yeah, good players. But they ain’t taking a risk with a bat or ball. So, you’d think of them as ‘yeah, they will have their moments,’ but they wouldn’t be really threatening,” said Lloyd.
Lloyd suggested opponents might view the Rohit Sharma led team as a team capable of occasional brilliance but not a consistent threat.
Meanwhile, India’s preparations begin with a warm-up match against Bangladesh in the USA on a yet-to-be-announced date. The ICC has scheduled warm-up games from May 27th to June 1st across the USA and Trinidad and Tobago. These non-T20I matches allow teams to experiment and field their entire 15-member squads. Each team can play up to two warm-up matches, depending on their arrival schedule.
India will begin its T20 World Cup campaign on June 5th against Ireland, followed by a much-anticipated clash with Pakistan on June 9th.
