Simon Katich cast doubt on David Warner’s inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad, citing Warner’s recent inconsistent form and Australia’s batting depth.
Former Australian batter Simon Katich has thrown shade on David Warner’s place in the upcoming T20 World Cup squad. Katich emphasised that while Warner is a key player for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ongoing IPL season, his recent form has raised concerns.
Katich pointed out not only Warner’s recent struggles in the recent ILT20 but also his inconsistency in the IPL over the past few seasons. This, coupled with Australia’s depth of batting talent, could lead to Warner’s omission from the World Cup squad.
“His last couple of years in the IPL, I think it was like two years ago, with the Sunrisers, where he got dropped, and that obviously had an impact. He probably has not been at his run-scoring best there compared to when he was at the peak of his power,”Katich said on ESPN’s Around the Wicket.
“I think with Travis Head emerging and Mitchell Marsh at the top of the order, and I think Josh Inglis emerged on that recent tour of India last year where he got that hundred. Matthew Wade has done a good job in the finishing role, and we also know that Tim David is in there. Maxwell is in career-best form. So, there is going to be a little squeeze in there. So, I think Warner needs to have a good IPL. I still think he will go to that World Cup, but I would not say that he is a shoo-in at this point,” added Katich.
Katich emphasised that form will be the ultimate deciding factor in selecting the final T20 World Cup squad. “I think it is going to come down to form. I know he has done well recently against the West Indies, but the conditions in the T20 World Cup will be completely different,” Katich said.
While his recent inconsistencies raised concerns, David Warner’s performance in this IPL will be under scrutiny. With an impactful performance, he might be able to fixate his spot in the playing XI of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad. The southpaw will be seen playing against the Punjab Kings on March 23rd.
