Virat Kohli’s Leadership Backed By AB de Villiers
AB de Villiers supported Virat Kohli as the ideal candidate to lead RCB in IPL 2025.
South African cricket legend AB de Villiers has endorsed Virat Kohli as the best candidate to captain Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). The former RCB stalwart believes Kohli’s leadership skills and immense experience can inspire the team in their pursuit of a maiden IPL title.
The captaincy role at RCB became vacant after Faf du Plessis departed to join Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2025 mega auction. While RCB focused their auction strategy on strengthening specific roles within the squad, the leadership question remains unresolved.
Addressing this in a recent YouTube video, de Villiers highlighted Kohli’s credentials, stating, “Friends, I think Virat Kohli is the only option [for RCB’s captaincy choice]. He is near the end of his career, more inspired than ever before. Till the time he gets the form and scores runs, we are used to watching him play match-winning innings. It’s like a swansong.”

Kohli previously captained RCB from 2013 to 2021, guiding the team to the IPL 2016 final. That season, he delivered a historic performance, smashing four centuries. Despite stepping down as captain in 2021, the prospect of his return to the role has generated widespread anticipation. De Villiers sees this as a golden opportunity for Kohli to script a memorable chapter with the franchise he has loyally served for over a decade.
In recent months, Kohli has faced challenges with his batting form, particularly in Test cricket. While he scored a brilliant century in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, his performances dipped as India suffered series losses to New Zealand and Australia. Nevertheless, Kohli has a history of bouncing back strongly and is expected to regain his rhythm during the upcoming Champions Trophy, setting the stage for IPL 2025.
