Gautam Gambhir’s delay in joining as the ICT head coach has been reported to be because of hefty salary negotiations with the BCCI.
The Indian Cricket Board is all set to name former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the senior men’s team. However, the official announcement is pending due to ongoing salary negotiations, according to a report by The Indian Express.
Gautam Gambhir has been the leading candidate for the position ever since outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid expressed his desire not to continue after the T20 World Cup. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has already interviewed two candidates for the head coach position, namely, Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman. An official announcement is expected soon, with strong indications that Gambhir will take up the role.
Once Gambhir’s salary is finalised, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will make the official announcement. Gambhir is expected to receive a higher salary than his predecessor, Rahul Dravid, who earned approximately INR 12 crore per year.
When the BCCI advertised the head coach position, they stated that the salary would be “negotiable and commensurate with experience.” It appears that Gambhir and the BCCI are still negotiating the ideal salary for the former cricketer to lead the Indian team to new heights.
Interestingly, Gambhir was recently seen filming a farewell video for the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, hinting at an end to his coaching job with the franchise. He played a pivotal role in leading them to an IPL championship after a decade.
Meanwhile, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the new coach will join the Indian side for the upcoming Sri Lanka series, implying that the announcement should be made by July 26.
