Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting pledged to ramp up intensity ahead of their IPL 2024 opener against Punjab Kings, aiming to improve on their previous season’s performance.
Ricky Ponting is determined to improve DC’s performance from the previous season as they gear up for the upcoming IPL edition starting on March 22. Finishing ninth in IPL 2023, the team plans to play their first two home games in Visakhapatnam. With the tournament starting next week, the Delhi Capitals hit the field for their first training session on Wednesday.
However, Ponting admitted that the team is still finding their rhythm, with just over a week left before their first match against Punjab Kings. Reflecting on the training session, Ponting expressed excitement and optimism for the season ahead, emphasizing that the team is gradually building momentum.
“What I saw today was very exciting, very promising. It’s great to be back with the Delhi Capitals family. It’s just the start. We don’t expect to be practicing at our absolute best right now. We’re not even so much looking forward to the first game yet. We’re getting some volume work done,” Ponting said in a press-release.
The Delhi Capitals’ approach for the upcoming season remains the same, but Ponting will aim to intensify his focus on winning the tournament.
“It’s not a different approach, it’s the same, but I’m going to be more intense with the way that I go about it this year. Every time I come here I talk about wanting to win the IPL and nothing changes there. I’m just going to talk about that a lot more this year,” the head coach said.
“I want the guys to be fully engaged and that’s the reason we’re all here. It’s my job to bring success to this team. We’re not talking about just winning enough games to qualify. We’re talking about winning the IPL. Everything we do, every training session we have, every meeting we have, every recovery session we have, every chat that I have with the players is going to be about making them better to give ourselves the best chance of winning,” he added.
Ponting also expressed excitement about reuniting with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, highlighting his invaluable energy and positive impact on the team. With Pant’s return, the team anticipates a boost in morale and performance as they prepare to kick off their IPL 2024 journey against Punjab Kings at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium in Mohali.
