Delhi Capitals to Decide on New Captain
The Delhi Capitals reportedly decided not to retain Rishabh Pant as captain for the 2025 IPL season.
India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will not captain the Delhi Capitals in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), as per a report from The Times of India (TOI). According to the report, the Capitals are considering a new captain, with all-rounder Axar Patel emerging as a strong candidate to succeed Pant, who has been leading the side since 2021.
“There are chances that India all-rounder Axar Patel may take over as the new captain, or the franchise might target someone with leadership potential during the IPL auction,” a source quoted by TOI said. While Pant remains the franchise’s top retention pick, the team management reportedly believes he would perform better without the added burden of captaincy.

Pant returned as captain for the 2024 IPL after missing the 2023 season due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Despite scoring 446 runs in 13 games at a strike rate of 155, the Delhi Capitals failed to make the playoffs. The team’s last appearance in the playoffs was in 2021, and their best performance came in 2020 when they finished as runners-up under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy.
DC Might Let Go Of Pant
There is speculation that Delhi might aim to bring Iyer back if the Kolkata Knight Riders do not retain him. As per the TOI report, Pant recently met with Delhi Capitals’ co-owners Parth Jindal and Kiran Kumar Grandhi to discuss his future at the franchise. Additionally, a tweet from Pant on October 12 sparked rumours that the franchise might release him, though a PTI report stated that Pant, Axar Patel (INR 14 crore), and Kuldeep Yadav (INR 11 crore) are likely to be retained.

With five retentions costing INR 75 crore, the franchise could use the Right to Match (RTM) option to retain emerging Australian star Jake Fraser-McGurk and South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs, depending on their price tags at the auction.
