Thumb surgery might keep CSK’s star batter, Devon Conway, out of his first IPL leg, which raised questions about top-order replacements.
In a recent development, Devon Conway, the New Zealand top-order batter, would not be available for Chennai Super Kings for the first leg of IPL 2024. Chennai Super Kings bagged the Kiwi wicketkeeper for a base price of Rs 1 crore. However, the New Zealand Cricket Board stated that he might be ruled out of the first leg of the upcoming IPL season.
The left-handed batter suffered an injury in his left thumb during the T20I series against Australia. After discussing with the medical team, it was concluded that Conway would require surgery for complete recovery.
“Blackcaps opener Devon Conway will this week undergo surgery on the left thumb he damaged during the KFC T20I series against Australia. Following several scans and specialist advice, the decision was made, to operate on Conway with a likely recovery period of at least eight weeks,” the NZC stated in an announcement.
The 32-year-old had been an asset to the Chennai Super Kings in the last season of the tournament, scoring 672 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 139.7. Now, Conway’s absence creates a significant void in the top order. Hence, either Ajinkya Rahane or Rachin Ravindra might open this season.
Although CSK has not yet announced a replacement, they might announce one soon as NZC’s statement confirmed that the batter is not joining IPL 2024 before the second leg.
