Former Sri Lankan U-19 cricket captain Dhammika Niroshana was shot dead at his residence, suspect and motive yet to be confirmed.
Sri Lankan cricket is in mourning after the sudden death of Dhammika Niroshana, a former captain of the national Under-19 team. Local media reports indicate Niroshana was shot and killed at his residence in Ambalangoda on Tuesday night.
According to reports, the 41-year-old cricketer was with his wife and two children when he was attacked. Police arrived at the scene upon receiving information and took Niroshana’s body into custody for an autopsy. An investigation into the incident is currently underway. Details regarding the suspect and the motive behind the shooting remain unknown at this time.
Dhammika Niroshana, a right-arm fast bowler and right-handed batter, represented Sri Lanka at the U-19 level. He made his debut in 2000 and spent several years playing age-group cricket. He is remembered as a talented all-rounder who captained Sri Lanka at the 2002 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, claiming seven wickets at an impressive average of 19.28.

While Niroshana never graduated to the senior national team, he had a successful domestic career, representing clubs like Chilaw Marians Cricket Club, Galle Cricket Club, and Singha Sports Club. He amassed over 200 runs and 19 wickets in his 12 first-class matches and 48 runs and five wickets in eight List-A matches.
The Sri Lankan cricketing community has expressed shock and condolences for Niroshana’s untimely demise. Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, and Dinesh Chandimal, all prominent Sri Lankan players, are reported to have played under Niroshana’s leadership during their youth careers.
