The Mumbai Cricket Association will install a life-size statue of former India batter Dilip Vengsarkar at Wankhede Stadium to honour his contribution to the game.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to honour former India and Mumbai batter Dilip Vengsarkar with a life-size statue at Wankhede Stadium. The announcement was made after the Apex Council meeting on October 8. Vengsarkar, who also served as MCA’s vice-president, is being recognised for his contributions to Indian and Mumbai cricket.
Along with the tribute, the MCA outlined new initiatives to enhance grassroots cricket across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The association plans to establish academies and upgrade facilities to support young talent. It also intends to provide ground equipment to maidan clubs.
“The Council has unanimously resolved to install a life-size statue of Dilip Vengsarkar at Wankhede Stadium in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian and Mumbai cricket,” Cricbuzz quoted the MCA president as saying.
“Honouring Dilip Vengsarkar with a statue at Wankhede is a tribute to one of Mumbai’s greatest cricketing icons, while our support for farmers and maidan clubs underlines MCA’s deep-rooted connection with the community,” Ajinkya Naik added.
Notably, Vengsarkar has represented India in 116 Tests and 129 ODIs, scoring 17 centuries and 35 fifties in the longer format. He holds the record for most Test hundreds by an Indian at Lord’s with three. A member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, Vengsarkar will join Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar with statues at Wankhede Stadium.

Ajinkya Naik and secretary Abhay Hadap further emphasized that the association’s efforts reflect both respect for past legends and commitment to developing the next generation of players.
“We are focused on strengthening the cricketing ecosystem from the grassroots. Setting up academies across the MMR and providing ground equipment to maidan clubs will help nurture the next generation of cricketers and ensure they have access to world-class facilities,” Hadap concluded.
