Tillakaratne Dilshan believes that the spin-friendly conditions in the West Indies for the 2024 T20 World Cup favor Asian teams, particularly India, as their spinners are in excellent form.
Former Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan believes that the spin-friendly pitches expected at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies will give an advantage to spinners, potentially leading to their dominance over batters.
Dilshan predicted that Asian teams are well-positioned to win the tournament, with India being a strong contender due to their spinners’ excellent form in the IPL. He also suggested that India could opt for a potent spin attack, consisting of two wrist spinners and a left-arm spinner, to maximize their chances of success in the Caribbean conditions.
“The Asian teams have the best chance to win the upcoming T20 World Cup with Caribbean conditions favouring the spinners. The Indian team is the favourite to lift the trophy with the form they are in, their spinners have dominated the IPL and they will look to continue their form in the World Cup too,” Dilshan said when speaking to IANS.
“With the changing conditions, they can pick options available for them. I feel two wrist spinners and a left-arm spinner will be the best combination for the Indian team,” he added.

The former Sri Lankan cricketer further expressed confidence in his country’s team, reminiscing about Sri Lanka’s victory in the 2014 T20 World Cup. Regarding Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana, who was sidelined from the IPL due to a hamstring injury, Dilshan assured that the bowler is recovering well at the Sri Lanka National Academy and is gearing up for the T20 World Cup.
“Sri Lanka also have good spinners and the squad looks quite dominating so yes, I hope they can bring back the 2014 glory,” said Dilshan.
“It was just a minor injury, he (Pathirana) is doing fine in Sri Lanka National Academy and preparing for the T20 WC, He is our best bowler and we want him to perform for the team,” he added.
India has selected four spinners in their 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, marking a return for Yuzvendra Chahal to the national team. Alongside him, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav aim to enhance their contributions. Similarly, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have also chosen four spinners each for their squads. The tournament will begin on June 2nd, with the first match featuring the United States and Canada.
