Following their defeat in the Cricket World Cup final against Australia, an image circulated on social media portraying Australian cricketer Mitchell Marsh with his feet on the coveted trophy, drawing widespread criticism for disrespecting the game’s symbol. Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami, the tournament’s top wicket-taker, voiced his dismay over Marsh’s action, describing it as distressing to witness such disrespect towards the highly coveted trophy cherished by all competing teams.
Shami expressed his emotional reaction, conveying sadness and hurt by the act, underlining the significance of the trophy that teams aspire to lift.
“I am hurt. The trophy, the ultimate prize every team vies for, the very emblem you aspire to raise overhead—seeing someone place their foot upon it didn’t sit well with me,” Shami said.
Shami, discussing his approach to bowling, highlighted simplicity and relaxation. Unlike some bowlers who inspect the pitch closely upon arrival, he prefers understanding its behavior through bowling on it rather than feeling unnecessary pressure.
Reflecting on his absence from India’s World Cup XI initially, Shami also stressed the necessity of mental strength during such times. Despite sitting out four matches, he found satisfaction in the team’s overall success. His remarkable 24 wickets in 7 matches eventually crowned him the top wicket-taker.
