Shubman Gill scored a century as India ended Day 1 of the second Test against England at 310 for 5, with Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten at the other end.
India ended Day 1 of the second Test at Edgbaston in a strong position, reaching 310 for 5. It was a much-needed fightback from India following their defeat in Leeds. Captain Gill led from the front with a composed century, his second in as many matches as skipper. He shared partnerships with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who played fluently for 87, and later with Rishabh Pant.
Early in the day, England’s decision to bowl first wasn’t about favourable conditions but more about recent chasing records at the venue. The morning started with some cloud cover, but seamers struggled to find movement. Chris Woakes, however, bowled with accuracy, bouncing back after a poor first Test.
KL Rahul fell cheaply, but Jaiswal and debutant Karun Nair steadied things until Nair departed just before lunch. Post-lunch, India slowed their scoring as Jaiswal and Gill consolidated. Stokes removed Jaiswal on 87, bringing Pant to the crease. Pant fell trying to attack Shoaib Bashir. Nitish Reddy followed soon after. At stumps, Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 41, with Gill at 114.

Being India’s number 4 and Test captain comes with a different pressure altogether. Really good to see it has not affected his batting one bit, in fact it’s elevated it. Well played @ShubmanGill👏🏻 #ENGvIND pic.twitter.com/hieAqUhGYB
